How to Play Bags aka Cornhole

Bags, which is also known as cornhole, is an extremely fun game to play and it is very easy to learn the rules. I think what most people get confused with is how the scoring works so we’ll clear that up as well. Let’s get started.

Requirements:

There are a few things you will need to start. First, the game is usually played with 4 people but you can get away with 2 if that’s all you have. Also, you’ll need 2 cornhole boards and 8 bean bags. The bean bags should consist of 4 of one color or design and 4 of a different color or design. Once you have all that you’re ready to play.

Setup

Place the one board 21 inches away from the front of another board. Split the 4 players into two teams and then one player from each team will stand next to one of the boards. If you’re standing next to your teammate you’re doing it wrong. All the bags should also be placed at one board.

Game Play

Now that the teams are set and one group has all the bags its time to play. Players will now throw the bags one at a time, alternating thrower, to the opposite board. So Player-1 will throw first then Player-2 will throw and back to Player-1… wash, rinse, repeat until all bags have thrown to the other board. Once the score has been tallied the team that scored the most points that round or, if there were no points, the team that previously threw goes first; following the alternating throwing.

Scoring

There are two ways to score in cornhole. If the bag lands on the board, without touching the ground and sliding onto the board, that counts as 1 point. If the bag goes into the hole that is 3 points. If at any point a bag is knocked off of the board that no longer counts as a point. Points are tallied at the end of a throwing round by subtracting each teams points with the remainder being the teams points.

For example:

Player-1 gets 2 bags on the board and 1 bag in the hole.

Player-2 gets 1 bag in the hole and 1 on the board.

You would take Player-1’s 3+1+1 = 5  and Player-2’s 3+1 = 4 and subtract them which leave’s Player-1’s team with a score of 1.

Winning

The way to win is to be the first team to reach 21 points. There is also a Zebra rule which means if a team scores 11 points while the other team still has 0 points, then the team with 11 points wins the game.

Now go play!
